Now that we have entered 2017, it is now time to choose a new flight controller for your drone. But what is the best flight controller? Which one should I get? On this page, I answer these questions for you by explaining exactly what the top 5 flight controllers actually are.
As a disclaimer, this is my personal preference. I have tried and tested most of the flight controllers out there and this is what I consider to be ‘the best.’ If you think something else should be on the list please comment below. Here they are!
Top 5 Best Flight Controllers 2017
The KISS FC 32bit Flight controller is an old favorite of ours. However, it is still (in our opinion) the best and most notorious flight controller that money can buy. The KISS FC was created by Flyduino, who have done a really splendid job on this particular FC. The KISS FC is both simple yet versatile – it does absolutely everything that a pilot would want in a quick and efficient manner. It is probably most notorious for having its own custom firmware which makes this flight controller really easy to use. Here is what Flyduino say about their flight controller:
‘The software setup side is reduced as far we can, many things are already taken in to account for you, if you bring some solid soldering skills you should be able to build your quad pretty quick.’
In simple terms, if you have the money get the Kiss. Almost every pilot that I know uses it and for a good reason – it is the best. Buy the KISS FC here.
Coming in at second has to be the XRacer F303. I personally like this flight controller for a whole host of reasons. The first reason is that it has a very fast processor – the F3. It also has a 128Mb flash storage which is particularly large and perfect for letting your black box log your flights. As I’m sure you know, when you have the ability to log your flights, you can eliminate issues with your tuning which is always beneficial. However, what really sells this flight controller is its price. The XRacer F303 costs just $27 meaning that it is very affordable and even cheaper than the Naze32 Rev6. This is also a very clean flight controller. It comes without fiddly connectors and instead has connection ports that contain pins. Buy the F303 Racer here.
One thing that many flight controllers lack is the combination of a power distribution board and a flight controller in one. However, DTFc was the first company to combine these two parts in one. Here is what Rotorgeeks have said about this:
Combine the latest FC tech with a high-current capable PDB and you get DTFc, the new heart of your minicopter. Connect all ESC and battery leads directly to this one small board to clean up your wiring, increase build speed, and reduce size, weight, and part count.
So why would you want a PDB and an FC in one? Well, when you have a smaller frame, such as the atom, which is incredibly tight for space, a combination of a PDB and FC saves much space but also you remove the low standoffs problem. So then. If you are looking for a flight controller for your 250s, the DTprobablyobally a good way to save weight and space in your quad.
Most of you are probably wondering why the Naze32 Rev 5 is only at number 4 on our list and your also wondering why I haven’t included the Naze32 Rev 6. Well, here is why.Firstly the Rev 5is better than the Rev 6. This is because the Rev 6 doesn’t have an F3 processor nor does it have a BLHeli pass though (unless it’s the 6a). Furthermore, you can go and buy a Rev 5 for around $15 which means that it is absolutely perfect for beginner pilots. Indeed, not only is it cheap, it is also a popular VC meaning that there are hundreds of online guides and videos explaining what to do when you encounter a problem. Again, I would recommend that if your a beginner, buy this FC with a presoldered pins. Thus, the Naze32 Rev 5 has a well deserved number 4 spot on our list. Buy it here.
Last on our list is the RMRC Seriously Dodo Flight Controller Rev 3. This is a flight controller created by Ready Made RC and features an F3 chip that has 8 separate input channels, 5v output, 3 UARTs (S.bus, Telementry and GPS.) If you are looking for a flight controller that you will be able to use for quite some time then the DODO is something you should consider. Another thing that is important to note is how RCMC donate some of the money you pay for their flight controller to keep this hobby going. So, I guess you can feel slightly better about your money spent when you buy a DODO flight controller. Buy it here.
